Hallowe’en Sesshin

at Hebden Bridge

With Ingen Breen

27th October 2013 to 2nd November 2013

Hallowe’en Sesshin – October 27th – November 2nd
Ingen II

Ingen Breen will be leading a Hallowe’en Sesshin at Riverdene Bunkhouse. Here are some details to give you a taste of the sesshin.

Join us in the exquisite setting of Jack Bridge near Hebden Bridge for our Samhain Zen Retreat. The Colden Water river runs close by offering classic retreat walks that stimulate the inner deepening of practice. The schedule will include zazen, training in zen forms and dharma talks. On Hallowe’en night we will have a Sejiki ceremony, ‘The Feeding of the Hungry Ghosts’. Ritual and Ceremony are very much part of the path of transformation in Zen Buddhism and Sejiki can be a very powerful experience: be warned! Hallowe’en gives a very atmospheric and appropriate backdrop for this ceremony.

Samhain is, for some, the ending of the year and the beginning of the new one, it is a time of transition and a time when ‘the worlds overlap’ – this is what makes it a time of ghosts and ephemeral otherworldly experiences. The doors are open – and in this time of transition a few people will receive Jukai, a ceremony of receiving Buddha’s Robe, their Dharma Name and The Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts; their practice will cross the threshold of lay initiation.

ACCOMMODATION

The sesshin is non-residential. For retreatants visiting from outside Hebden Bridge we have secured rooms in local Sangha members homes which are all in walking distance of the retreat venue.

FOOD

We will be eating Oryoki in the zendo. The food will be vegetarian with vegan options. Please let us know if you have any specific needs and we will do our best to accommodate them.

MEDITATION GEAR

If you have your own mats and cushions then please bring them. We do a some spare if you don't have your own, but we do need a few more (particularly mats) so if you have any spare that you can bring please let us know.

HALLOWEEN

On Halloween night we will have a Sejiki ceremony, ‘The Feeding of the Hungry Ghosts’. For this you are asked to dress up in Halloween costume, so please bring your best Halloween outfit with you :).
